I’ve shown you how customer metafields in Shopify POS can change retail. These custom fields allow you to capture and use customer data in-store.

With customer metafields you can create more personalized shopping experiences. Whether it’s tracking sizes for an apparel store or design preferences for a home decor shop, you can tailor your service to each customer’s needs.

That’s more customer happiness and stronger relationships and more business.

What are custom customer data fields?

Customer metafields are powerful tools that allow you to capture more buyer information beyond basic contact details. These custom fields allow me to collect and store specific customer attributes that matter to my store.

I can use metafields to track customer data in a structured way. This could be:

  • Birthdays
  • Loyalty program status
  • Product preferences
  • Tax IDs

The magic of metafields is in the standardization of data collection. By defining field types I ensure consistency across customer profiles:

Field typeExample use
Date/TimeBirthday
True/FalseVIP status
DropdownFavorite category

This structured approach prevents freeform text entry and typos. It also makes it much easier to use this data for targeted marketing or personalized offers later on.

For my retail staff metafields make it easier to capture important customer info. Instead of typing out long notes they can select or enter info with a few taps. This makes for more consistent and complete data collection across all customer interactions.

By using customer metafields I create a rich standardized dataset that gives me more insight into my customers. This data can be used for more effective marketing, better customer service and more business.

4 Ways to use Customer Metafields in Retail

1. Create Personalized Shopping Experiences

I’ve found that using customer metafields I can store unique information about each customer, like their style preferences or important dates.

This data allows me to personalize. For example I can greet customers with product recommendations based on their past purchases or offer a birthday discount.

2. Loyalty Programs

I’ve integrated loyalty programs directly into the point of sale system using customer metafields. I can store and track loyalty points, membership tiers and rewards for each customer.

During checkout I can quickly view and update a customer’s loyalty status so they never miss out on earning points or redeeming rewards.

3. Customer Segments

Customer metafields have been super helpful for segmenting my customer base. I can assign attributes to customers and tailor my marketing more effectively.

For example I can offer VIP service to VIP customers or an in-store discount during a customer’s birthday month.

In a pet store I consult for we use metafields to segment customers by pet. This allows the marketing team to send targeted email campaigns with products for each pet type.

4. Regulatory Compliance

I’ve found customer metafields to be key for compliance with various legal and regulatory requirements. I can store compliance related information in customer profiles and easily manage and access this data. This is important as there are regional and industry variations in laws and regulations.

For a B2B company I advise we use the “Number” content type in metafields to store each customer’s Tax ID or VAT number. This structured data makes invoicing and tax exemption so much easier.

Use Customer Metafields in Your Store

I’ve found using customer metafields in Shopify POS can change your retail business. Go to your Shopify admin and set up custom fields to capture customer info.

Sales staff can then access and update this information in the POS system. This means clienteling and personalization at the checkout counter.

Don’t forget to customize your theme in the editor to show metafield data. So customers see this information when they browse online too.

By using customer metafields you’re giving your team the tools to improve the shopping experience. It’s an easy way to stay ahead of the competition and meet customer expectations in retail today.

Customer Metafields FAQ

Setting up Customer Metafields in Shopify POS

To set up customer metafields in Shopify POS I need to go to the Shopify admin first. There I can create and configure the metafields I want to use. Once I’ve created them I’ll “pin” the metafields I want to see in POS. So they’re available when I’m working with customers in-store.

For a full walkthrough of this process I can check the Shopify Help Center. It has step by step instructions.

Adding and Editing Customer Metafields In-Store

When I’m using Shopify POS I can add and edit customer metafields from the “Customers” section in the top navigation. This works for existing and new customer profiles.

For existing customers:

  1. I search for their name or email
  2. I tap on their profile

For new customers:

  1. I tap the ‘+’ icon
  2. I enter their details

Once I’m in a customer’s profile I’ll see a “Metafields” option. Tapping “View all” shows me the list of metafields. From there I can select which ones to add or edit.

The Shopify Help Center offers more detailed guidance if I need it.
