Your options include:
- Starter: $5 per month with 5% transaction fees. Intended for influencers and low-volume sellers, the Starter plan for Shopify doesn’t allow you to build a comprehensive store. However, it does add Shopify payment processing and checkout capabilities to an existing website, and allows you to sell through social media channels and messaging apps.
- Basic Shopify: $39 per month (or $29 per month paid annually): Ideal for solo entrepreneurs, the Basic Shopify plan gives you all of the core features you need to build and run an online store. You’ll get access to marketing tools, shipping discounts, automation tools, abandoned cart recovery tools and a free SSL certificate. The transaction fees for this plan start at 2.9% plus 30 cents.
- Shopify: $105 per month (or $79 per month paid annually): Intended for smaller teams, the Shopify plan comes with all the features of Basic Shopify, from marketing tools, to shipping labels and website themes, as well as 5 staff accounts. You also get professional reports, and gift cards. Transaction fees start at 2.6% plus 30 cents.
- Advanced Shopify: $399 per month (or $299 per month paid annually): As your business grows, the Advanced plan gives you access to more advanced custom reports, priority shipping, 15 staff accounts, and enhanced customer service. You’ll also have access to more advanced POS features on Shopify POS Lite. Transaction fees for this plan start at 2.4% plus 30 cents for online transactions.
- Shopify Plus: Prices starting at $2000 USD with transaction fees of 2.15%, Shopify Plus is the enterprise-level Shopify plan, offering all the features of Advanced Shopify, plus higher Shopify shipping discounts, advanced APIs, customization options, and premium customer service or support options.
Shopify Transaction Fees, Payment Fees, and Other Costs
Alongside the monthly fees you’ll need to pay to access the Shopify functionality you need, there may be other costs to consider.
There’s an extra “Shopify charge” for payment processing, through Shopify Payments. Plus, if you want to use external payment gateways, there will be other payment gateway fees to consider, which vary based on your chosen plan.

Shopify Payment Fees
By far, the cheapest way to process payments through Shopify is to use Shopify Payments, the integrated payment processing solution offered by Shopify.
Notably, however, Shopify Payments isn’t available in all countries and regions, so you’ll need to check availability before choosing your Shopify plan.
Shopify Payments, like all payment processing providers, charges fees for card processing. These “credit card fees” will vary depending on the plan you choose.
- Starter: 5%
- Basic: 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Shopify: 2.6% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Advanced: 2.4% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Shopify Plus: 2.15%
As your business grows and you make more revenue, it might be worth upgrading to a more expensive plan to save money on your payment fees.
Notably, higher-level Shopify plans, from Shopify, to Advanced Shopify and the Shopify Plus plan also include higher shipping discounts.
Shopify Transaction Fees
If you decide to integrate your Shopify store with a third-party payment gateway, such as the options offered by Stripe, Square, or PayPal, there’s another fee to pay.
This is a payment processing fee that’s added on top of the credit card processing rate charged by your payment gateway.
Once again, the fees you pay will vary depending on your chosen plan. Basic Shopify charges rates of 2%, Shopify charges 1%, Advanced Shopify charges 0.5% and Shopify Plus charges 0.15%.
This means if for instance, you were using the Basic Shopify plan, and PayPal to process payments, you’d pay 2% in transaction fees, and 2.9% plus 30 cents for every online transaction managed by PayPal.
For a transaction worth $100, you’d pay $2 to Shopify, and $2.90 to PayPal, plus an extra 30 cents for each transaction, leaving you with around $94.80 left.
Additional Shopify Fees
On top of the credit card and payment gateway fees mentioned above, there are other costs that you might incur depending on the type of business you run.
You may need to access expert support from a Shopify specialist if you want to leverage custom code on your site, for instance.
Alternatively, if you’re shipping products throughout the US, Canada, and other regions, you’ll need to think about the shipping costs incurred by either a third-party logistics provider, or Shopify Shipping, and Shopify Fulfillment.
Each Shopify core plan does come with shipping discounts, which increase along with he price of your plan:
- Basic: Up to 64%
- Shopify: Up to 72%
- Advanced: Up to 74%
- Plus: Variable
You’ll also need to consider the cost for:
- Add-ons and integrations: Many of the integrations available on the Shopify app market will come with an additional monthly fee to pay. However, some apps for dropshipping, fraud analysis, marketing and more do have a free plan.
- Point of sale options: Although Shopify Lite is included on most Shopify Plans, you’ll need to pay extra if you’re using the Starter plan. If you want to access Shopify POS Pro, you’ll pay an extra $89 per month per location on each plan (unless you use Shopify Plus).
- Premium themes and templates: If you want to upgrade your store’s appearance with premium themes and templates, there’ll be a one-time cost to pay for an advanced theme. You may also need to pay for developer support.
- Outsourcing: If you want to outsource things like shipping and fulfillment management to Shopify, there’s a fee to pay the Shopify fulfillment network. Alternatively, you may have to pay to access the service of certain dropshipping and logistics companies.
- Domain names: To access a unique domain for your Shopify store, you’ll need to pay an annual fee. You can buy a .com domain from Shopify directly for as little as $14 per year, or use an external domain registrar.
